The NASA FINESST 2025 funding opportunity provides Master’s and PhD students in Earth and space science with direct support to lead their own independent research projects. As part of NASA’s Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) program, FINESST is designed to empower the next generation of researchers to develop innovative scientific ideas that advance understanding of Earth systems, space environments, and planetary science.
This opportunity is specifically targeted at graduate students, offering them the chance to secure funding, gain research experience, and contribute to NASA’s long-term scientific missions.
About the Program
FINESST (Future Investigators in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology) is a competitive graduate student research program funded by NASA. It supports students pursuing Master’s and PhD degrees who are conducting research aligned with NASA’s Science Mission Directorate priorities.
Unlike large institutional grants, FINESST is designed to directly fund students as principal investigators of their own research proposals. This makes it a unique opportunity in the academic landscape, allowing students to take ownership of scientific projects while receiving financial support and mentorship through their academic institutions.
The program is part of NASA’s broader commitment to strengthening early-career scientific talent and ensuring continued innovation in Earth and space sciences.
Why This Opportunity Matters
Graduate research often depends on limited funding and institutional resources. FINESST addresses this gap by giving students the independence and financial backing to pursue original scientific questions without relying entirely on faculty-led funding structures.
This program plays a key role in shaping future leaders in Earth observation, climate science, astrophysics, and planetary exploration. By supporting student-led research, NASA ensures that emerging scientists can contribute fresh perspectives to some of the most important scientific challenges of our time, including climate change, environmental monitoring, and space exploration.
For students, FINESST is more than a grant — it is an entry point into NASA’s research ecosystem and a foundation for long-term academic and professional growth.
What Participants Will Gain
Selected applicants receive funding to support their research activities over multiple years, including data collection, analysis, fieldwork, and computational modeling.
Beyond funding, participants gain the opportunity to develop independent research leadership skills, strengthen their academic profiles, and build connections within NASA’s scientific community. The program also enhances competitiveness for future fellowships, postdoctoral positions, and research careers.
Students benefit from working on high-impact scientific questions while contributing to research that supports NASA’s missions and global scientific understanding.
Who Can Apply
FINESST is open to students enrolled in Master’s or PhD programs at accredited institutions. Applicants must be graduate students at the time of submission and must submit proposals through their academic institution.
Each proposal must be student-led, with faculty advisors providing guidance but not serving as principal investigators.
International students enrolled at eligible U.S. institutions may also be able to participate, depending on institutional eligibility.
Eligible Areas
Proposals must align with NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, which includes:
- Earth Science (climate systems, environment, natural hazards)
- Heliophysics (Sun–Earth interactions and space weather)
- Planetary Science (solar system formation and exploration)
- Astrophysics (universe, galaxies, and cosmic phenomena)
- Biological and Physical Sciences (effects of space environments on systems)
Research can include theoretical work, data analysis, modeling, laboratory studies, or observational science.
Application Process and Deadline
Applications must be submitted electronically through NASA’s NSPIRES system. Students are required to prepare a detailed research proposal outlining objectives, methodology, and expected outcomes, along with a supporting budget and institutional documentation.
The submission deadline for FINESST 2025 is July 14, 2026. Office hours will be held by NASA Earth Science teams on June 23 and June 24 (1–2 PM ET) for applicants seeking clarification.
Proposals undergo peer review based on scientific merit, feasibility, and relevance to NASA’s mission priorities. Successful applicants are typically notified several months after submission.
Learn more and apply on the official NSPIRES website.
