The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation offers a prestigious research fellowship program that enables qualified researchers from around the world to conduct independent research at German institutions. The Humboldt Research Fellowship supports both postdoctoral researchers and experienced academics across all research disciplines.

Fellowship Overview

The program sponsors researchers with above-average qualifications from all countries except Germany and Brazil. The fellowship allows for a 6 to 24-month research stay in Germany, providing substantial financial support and flexibility in planning research projects.

The foundation emphasizes diversity and balance among its fellows, expressly encouraging applications from female scientists and members of underrepresented groups. Applications are welcome regardless of ethnic, cultural or social background, gender identity, age, religion, worldview, disability or sexual orientation.

Two Fellowship Categories

Postdoctoral Researchers

The fellowship for postdoctoral researchers provides monthly funding of 2,700 euros plus additional benefits. This category targets researchers who completed their doctorate or equivalent academic qualification within the last four years, or those within six months of completion who can provide a written summary of their findings.

Fellowships can last from 6 to 24 months and may be divided into up to three separate stays within a three-year period. Applicants must have publications in academic journals reviewed according to international standards.

Experienced Researchers

More established academics can apply for the experienced researcher fellowship, which provides 3,200 euros monthly plus additional benefits. This track is designed for researchers who completed their doctorate within the last twelve years and have an extensive publication record.

These fellowships last from 6 to 18 months and can also be divided into up to three stays within three years. In fields where doctorates are uncommon, candidates may apply up to 16 years after completing their master’s degree, provided they have a publication record appropriate to their career level.

Additional Support and Benefits

Beyond the monthly fellowship amount, participants receive comprehensive support including:

  • Personal support throughout the sponsorship period
  • Flexible start dates
  • Intensive language courses for fellows and partners before the research stay
  • Family benefits for children and partners
  • Subsidies for private health insurance
  • Travel expense allowances
  • Alumni programs for continued collaboration after the fellowship

Eligibility Requirements

All applicants must meet specific criteria including nationality requirements, confirmation of available research facilities from a German host institution, expert reviews, and appropriate language skills. The foundation requires adherence to good scientific practice principles and scientific ethics guidelines.

Researchers who have previously received direct sponsorship from the Humboldt Foundation through research fellowships or awards are not eligible for this program but may access alumni programs instead.

Special Programs for Developing Countries

Researchers from developing and emerging countries whose work contributes to sustainable development should consider the Georg Forster Research Fellowship, which offers equivalent support. Brazilian researchers can only apply through the CAPES-Humboldt Research Fellowship program.

Application Process

Applications must be submitted online through the foundation’s portal.

Required documents include a two-page curriculum vitae, five-page research outline, complete publication list, selected key publications, doctoral certificate, and language certificates if required.

The host institution must provide a statement confirming research facilities availability, and two expert reviews are required. These documents must be uploaded directly by hosts and reviewers in protected areas of the application system.

Selection Timeline

The Selection Committee meets three times per year in March, July, and November. Applications typically require four to eight months for processing, with incomplete applications taking longer and potentially being postponed to later committee meetings.

The foundation expects to approve approximately 20 to 25 percent of applications received. Unsuccessful applicants may receive feedback upon request and can reapply if they significantly improve crucial aspects of their rejected application, though unanimously rejected applicants must wait a minimum of 18 months before reapplying.

Long-term Collaboration

The Humboldt Foundation maintains relationships with fellows beyond their research stays through alumni programs that support individual career development and future research collaborations. Return fellowships and subsequent visits to Germany are possible, creating lasting international research networks.

This fellowship represents a significant opportunity for international researchers to advance their careers while contributing to Germany’s research landscape and building lasting academic partnerships.
