The Canada Postdoctoral Research Award (CPRA) is one of the most prestigious federal research training awards offered in Canada. Jointly administered by CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC, the program is designed to support the next generation of global innovators, researchers, and creative thinkers. With a strong emphasis on research excellence, training, and career development, the CPRA empowers emerging scholars to advance world‑class research across health, natural sciences and engineering, social sciences, humanities, and interdisciplinary fields.

The CPRA is part of the Canada Research Training Awards Suite (CRTAS)—a national investment in research talent aimed at strengthening Canada’s innovation capacity, research ecosystem, and long‑term prosperity.

Award Value, Duration, and Tenure

  • Value: $70,000 per year
  • Duration: 24 months
  • Tenure Location: Eligible Canadian or international institutions
  • Results Announcement: March 31
  • Application Deadlines:
    • CIHR: September 17
    • NSERC: October 17
    • SSHRC: September 11

Applicants must submit through the appropriate agency’s online system, and all supporting documents must be uploaded before the deadline. Late submissions are not accepted.

Program Objective

The CPRA aims to:

  • Support outstanding postdoctoral researchers at a pivotal stage in their careers.
  • Strengthen Canada’s research capacity by nurturing future leaders in innovation, scholarship, and knowledge creation.
  • Provide flexibility for researchers to pursue advanced training in Canada or abroad.

Program Description

The CPRA supports postdoctoral researchers across a wide range of disciplines, including:

  • Health sciences
  • Natural sciences and engineering
  • Social sciences and humanities
  • Interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research

The award enables researchers to:

  • Expand their expertise through advanced research training.
  • Transition smoothly into the next phase of their academic or professional careers.
  • Contribute meaningfully to Canada’s research ecosystem and global competitiveness.

The program also aligns with Canada’s commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and research excellence.

Eligibility Requirements

General Eligibility

To apply, you must:

  1. Hold or expect to hold a doctorate or health professional degree before the award start date.
  2. Not hold or be on leave from a tenure‑track or tenured faculty position.
  3. Have completed all requirements of your doctoral or health professional degree no more than three years before September 1 of the application year.

Important clarification: The completion date refers to the date when all degree requirements were met, including thesis defense and submission of the corrected thesis—not the convocation date.

Eligibility Extensions (Up to 3 Years)

Extensions may be granted for:

  • Parental, medical, or family‑related interruptions
  • Mandatory military service
  • War, civil conflict, or natural disasters
  • Socio‑economic barriers limiting research opportunities
  • Full‑time relevant employment in industry or government
  • Primary caregiver responsibilities after birth or adoption
  • Non‑research clinical training (e.g., residency)

 

Restrictions

  • Only one application per academic year (CGS‑M, CGS‑D, or CPRA).
  • Maximum three CPRA applications in a lifetime.
  • You cannot have previously received a tri‑agency postdoctoral award (e.g., Banting).
  • You cannot hold a CPRA concurrently with another tri‑agency research training award.
  • Proposed research must be predominantly research‑oriented and distinct from your doctoral thesis.

Application Procedures

Selecting the Correct Agency

Choose the agency whose mandate aligns with your research:

  • CIHR: Health research
  • NSERC: Natural sciences and engineering
  • SSHRC: Social sciences and humanities

Submitting to the wrong agency may result in removal from the competition.

Submission Process

Applications must be submitted through:

  • CIHR: ResearchNET
  • NSERC: Online System
  • SSHRC: Application Portal

All references, institutional endorsements, and supporting documents must be submitted electronically before the deadline.

Institutional Deadlines

Some institutions have internal deadlines earlier than the agency deadlines. Applicants must comply with these internal timelines.

Priority Funding Areas

Awards may be reserved for:

  • Federal research priorities
  • Agency‑specific strategic areas
  • Emerging research needs

Applicants will be notified if priority areas are activated.

Joint Initiatives and Supplements

Additional funding may be available through:

  • Tri‑agency joint initiatives
  • Partnerships with public, private, and non‑profit organizations
  • Supplements supporting strategic research areas

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI)

The CPRA integrates EDI principles through:

Selection Criteria

Applications are evaluated based on:

  1. Research Potential and Experience (50%)
  2. Quality of Proposed Research Program (50%)

Notification of Results

  • Results are released by March 31.
  • Award recipients’ names and basic information will be published online.

Conditions of the Award

Award holders must comply with:

  • Tri‑Agency Research Training Award Holder’s Guide
  • All program‑specific policies and guidelines

Part‑time holding of the award may be permitted under certain conditions.

Official Languages

Applications may be submitted in English or French. Documents in other languages require a certified translation.
