McGill University’s Faculty of Law is now accepting applications for the prestigious 2025 O’Brien Graduate Fellowships. Established in 2005 through a generous donation by David O’Brien, these fellowships are awarded to outstanding Master’s or Doctoral students pursuing research in the field of human rights and legal pluralism.

McGill’s graduate law programs are the most comprehensive in Canada, encompassing a broad array of legal traditions and specializations. Students benefit from a curriculum that draws from both civil and common law traditions, while also exploring areas such as international law, environmental law, health law, human rights law, comparative law, and even air and space law.

O’Brien Fellows become part of McGill’s Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism, a vibrant hub of interdisciplinary research and dialogue focused on critical issues in human rights and pluralism. LLM Fellows receive up to $25,000 per year for one year, while DCL Fellows are awarded $35,000 per year, renewable twice for a total of three years (contingent on maintaining eligibility).

To be eligible, applicants must have an exceptional academic record and a well-developed research proposal in the field of human rights and legal pluralism. Importantly, this fellowship is an entrance scholarship—students already enrolled in McGill’s LLM or DCL programs are not eligible to apply.

The deadline for applications is January 1, 2025. Prospective students must also submit their application for admission to McGill’s graduate law programs by the same deadline.

For more information on the O’Brien Graduate Fellowships and the application process, visit McGill University’s Faculty of Law website.
