Overview of the USF International Fellowships 2026

The International Fellowship scheme is a flagship initiative by the Urban Studies Foundation aimed at:

Since its inception, the program has supported over 80 fellows from more than 20 countries, contributing significantly to the development of urban scholarship worldwide.

Fellowship Purpose and Focus

This fellowship is specifically designed to support scholars who have already completed their primary research and are ready to:

  • Publish academic books

The program does not fund new research or data collection. Instead, it provides the time, resources, and environment needed to transform existing research into high-quality academic publications.

Research Areas Covered

Applicants may propose projects within any urban studies theme that contributes to understanding cities in the Global South. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Climate and sustainability
  • Urban development and governance
  • Housing and infrastructure
  • Migration and mobility
  • Public health and social equity
  • Urban planning and policy
  • Political economy
  • Transport and technology
  • Ecology and environment

Successful proposals should demonstrate a clear and original contribution to the field of urban studies, especially in relation to the unique development trajectories of cities in the Global South.

Mentorship and Host Institution

A key component of the fellowship is the collaboration with:

  • A host university or research institution (anywhere globally)
  • A senior academic mentor in the applicant’s field

Expectations:

  • The mentor provides academic guidance and support
  • The host institution offers a productive research environment
  • Fellows are integrated into research networks and communities
  • Long-term collaboration opportunities are encouraged

Fellowship Duration and Timeline

  • Duration: 3 to 9 months
  • Start period:
    • No earlier than 4 months after the deadline
    • No later than 14 months after the deadline

Funding and Benefits

The fellowship provides comprehensive financial support, including:

  • Return international travel
  • Contribution toward research-related costs
  • Mentor engagement support (for collaboration with the fellow’s home institution or networks)
