  • Be a citizen of one of the eligible West African countries.
  • Have lived in one or more eligible countries for at least five of the last ten years .
  • Meet one of the Rhodes age requirements: 18–24 years old by 1 October 2026; or
  • 18–25 years old for certain professional degree graduates; or
  • Under 27 years old if the first undergraduate degree was completed on or after 1 October 2025.
  • Have completed an undergraduate degree before the application deadline.
  • Hold or expect to obtain a First Class Honours degree or equivalent .
  • Meet the University of Oxford’s English language requirements.

Applications Open for the Fully Funded Rhodes Scholarship for West Africa 2027

Applications are now open for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship for West Africa 2027, offering exceptional young leaders from West Africa the opportunity to pursue fully funded postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.

The Rhodes Scholarship is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious international scholarship programmes. Successful applicants will receive comprehensive funding to undertake graduate studies at Oxford beginning in October 2027.

The scholarship is offered in conjunction with the Oxford-Morland-West Africa Graduate Scholarship.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply, candidates must:

  • Be a citizen of one of the eligible West African countries.
  • Have lived in one or more eligible countries for at least five of the last ten years.
  • Meet one of the Rhodes age requirements:
    • 18–24 years old by 1 October 2026; or
    • 18–25 years old for certain professional degree graduates; or
    • Under 27 years old if the first undergraduate degree was completed on or after 1 October 2025.

Required Application Documents

Applicants will be required to submit:

  • Proof of citizenship and identity
  • Evidence of residency
  • Official university transcripts
  • English language test results (or waiver request if eligible)
  • Completed online CV section
  • Colour passport photograph
  • Personal Statement (maximum 1,000 words)
  • Academic Statement of Study (maximum 450 words)
  • Four to six referee details (including at least three academic referees)

Personal Statement Questions

Applicants should address the following themes within a single essay:

  • Which Rhodes Scholar qualities do you demonstrate most strongly?
  • How will you contribute to and learn from the Oxford community?
  • How will you use your talents to solve pressing global challenges?

Academic Statement

Candidates must explain:

  • Their academic goals and long-term career aspirations.
  • Why their chosen Oxford course fits those goals.
  • How their previous education and experience prepare them for graduate study.

  • Integrity and moral character

Selection Process

The selection process includes:

  1. Eligibility screening
  2. Longlisting
  3. Virtual preliminary interviews
  4. Shortlisting
  5. Final interviews and social engagement event in West Africa

Final interviews are expected to take place in Abuja, Accra, or Lagos, with travel and accommodation provided for finalists.
