Young people around the world who are passionate about human rights now have an exciting opportunity to become part of a global movement through the Global Youth Network for Human Rights (GYNfHR), an initiative coordinated by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

The Global Youth Network for Human Rights is designed to connect young people from every region of the world who are committed to promoting, protecting, and advancing human rights. Whether participants are experienced human rights advocates or simply interested in learning more about human rights issues, the Network offers an inclusive and accessible platform for engagement, dialogue, collaboration, and action.

Created and coordinated by the OHCHR Child and Youth Rights Unit, the Network provides young people with opportunities to contribute their perspectives to global human rights discussions, engage with United Nations initiatives, participate in consultations and campaigns, and connect with a diverse international community of youth changemakers.

Importantly, the Network is open to all young people regardless of their educational background, previous experience, organizational affiliation, or level of knowledge about human rights. The initiative aims to ensure that youth voices from all walks of life are heard and represented in conversations shaping the future of human rights globally.

About the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the principal United Nations entity responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide.

OHCHR works to:

  • Promote universal human rights.
  • Monitor and report on human rights issues globally.
  • Support governments in implementing human rights obligations.
  • Strengthen accountability mechanisms.
  • Protect vulnerable and marginalized populations.
  • Facilitate youth participation in human rights processes.

Recognizing the important role that young people play in advancing social justice and human dignity, OHCHR has increasingly invested in youth engagement initiatives that encourage meaningful participation in human rights advocacy and policymaking.

The Global Youth Network for Human Rights is one of the flagship initiatives supporting this vision.

What is the Global Youth Network for Human Rights?

The Global Youth Network for Human Rights is a worldwide platform that brings together young people who share a commitment to human rights and social justice.

The Network was established in response to growing interest from young people who have participated in OHCHR youth engagement initiatives and expressed a desire for more continuous interaction, collaboration, and learning opportunities.

The Network seeks to:

  • Strengthen youth participation in human rights discussions.
  • Foster dialogue between young people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Create opportunities for collaboration and exchange.
  • Ensure youth perspectives inform UN human rights work.
  • Expand access to human rights engagement opportunities.
  • Reach young people who may not belong to formal organizations or existing participation structures.

Through the Network, youth are not merely observers of human rights processes—they become active contributors helping to shape discussions, policies, and initiatives.

Why the Global Youth Network for Human Rights Matters

Young people today face numerous challenges, including discrimination, inequality, climate change, conflict, digital rights concerns, unemployment, and barriers to participation.

At the same time, youth are leading some of the world’s most impactful social movements and advocating for change in their communities.

The Global Youth Network for Human Rights recognizes that:

  • Young people are key stakeholders in human rights issues.
  • Youth perspectives are essential to effective policymaking.
  • Human rights work benefits from diverse lived experiences.
  • Inclusive participation strengthens democratic processes.
  • Sustainable solutions require meaningful youth engagement.

By creating a global platform for youth participation, OHCHR ensures that young voices contribute directly to discussions affecting their futures.
