Designed to support women at the beginning of their academic careers, these highly competitive fellowships provide generous financial support, research funding, access to an internationally renowned scholarly community, and the freedom to focus exclusively on research for up to three years.

The fellowship programme is open to eligible female researchers from any country and spans a broad range of disciplines, including Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Psychology, Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

About the Newnham College Research Fellowships

Research Fellowship Opportunities Available

Newnham College currently offers several prestigious research fellowship schemes, including:

Junior Research Fellowships

The Junior Research Fellowships are intended to support outstanding women researchers during the early stages of their academic careers.

The fellowships are highly competitive and attract applications from exceptional researchers worldwide.

Fellowship Duration

Successful applicants will normally be appointed for:

  • Three years

Although the fellowship runs for three years, some fellows may leave earlier if they secure permanent academic positions at Cambridge or other institutions.

Financial Support

Successful fellows receive an attractive financial package that includes:

  • A stipend at Point 42 on the University of Cambridge salary scale, valued at £38,784 (2025–26 rate, subject to future pay adjustments).
  • Annual salary progression over a three-point scale.
  • Potential access to College accommodation available for rent.
  • Research funding to support conference participation and research activities.
  • A one-time allocation of up to £10,000 to organize an approved Newnham-based academic event such as:

Newby Trust Research Fellowship

Newnham College also administers the prestigious Newby Trust Research Fellowship, offered in partnership with Clare College.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants should note that these fellowships are designed specifically to support women at an early stage of their academic careers.

Eligible applicants should:

  • Have recently completed a PhD.
  • Have recently submitted a PhD thesis.
  • Have no more than a few years of full-time postdoctoral research experience.
  • Demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and research potential.
  • Be expected to pursue careers at internationally recognized academic institutions.

Importantly:

  • There is no age limit.
  • Applicants who have experienced career breaks for family or professional reasons will not be disadvantaged during the selection process.

The fellowships are open to women of all nationalities. Candidates who require a visa to work in the United Kingdom may apply, but appointment is conditional upon obtaining the appropriate visa covering the full duration of the fellowship.
