The International Peace Institute (IPI) is offering a unique opportunity for a full-time, six-month paid internship as part of our Peace, Climate, and Sustainable Development Program. This internship, starting in early September 2024, is designed for passionate individuals who are eager to contribute to global climate action and sustainable development initiatives.
Internship Overview
As a Peace, Climate, and Sustainable Development Intern at IPI, you will play a key role in addressing the climate emergency through two primary avenues:
- Advising Member States: You will assist in advising member states at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), including several small island developing states (SIDS).
- Research and Event Coordination: You will be involved in convening events and conducting research on critical climate action topics, including climate finance, loss and damage, and adaptation. The program is also expanding to cover broader issues of global equity, such as international financial architecture reform.
This role offers the chance to work closely with the Director of the Peace, Climate, and Sustainable Development Program and interact regularly with other IPI programs. The internship will provide valuable hands-on experience, with the Climate team offering guidance and feedback to support your learning and professional growth.

- Support social media outputs for the program.

- Manage travel logistics for both international and local travels.
- Perform various administrative tasks in support of the Climate team.
Qualifications
- Graduate-level coursework in international affairs, political science, or a related field with a focus on climate issues.
- Knowledge of UN institutions and multilateral policy processes; experience within the UN system, particularly the 2nd committee, is a plus.
- Fluency in English; proficiency in an additional official UN language is an advantage.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a multicultural environment, demonstrating sensitivity and respect for diversity and gender.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, meet deadlines, work independently, and take initiative.
- Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills.
- Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.
Compensation
This is a full-time internship (40 hours per week) with a pay rate of $16.00 per hour.
