The Canada Postdoctoral Research Award (CPRA) is one of the most prestigious federal research training awards offered in Canada. Eligibility Requirements

General Eligibility

To apply, you must:

1. Hold or expect to hold a doctorate or health professional degree before the award start date.
2. Not hold or be on leave from a tenure‑track or tenured faculty position.
3. Have completed all requirements of your doctoral or health professional degree no more than three years before September 1 of the application year.

Important clarification: The completion date refers to the date when all degree requirements were met, including thesis defense and submission of the corrected thesis—not the convocation date.

Eligibility Extensions (Up to 3 Years)

Extensions may be granted for:

• Parental, medical, or family‑related interruptions
• Mandatory military service
• War, civil conflict, or natural disasters
• Socio‑economic barriers limiting research opportunities
• Full‑time relevant employment in industry or government
• Primary caregiver responsibilities after birth or adoption
• Non‑research clinical training (e.g., residency)

 

Restrictions

• Only one application per academic year (CGS‑M, CGS‑D, or CPRA).
• Maximum three CPRA applications in a lifetime.
• You cannot have previously received a tri‑agency postdoctoral award (e.g., Banting).
• You cannot hold a CPRA concurrently with another tri‑agency research training award.
• Proposed research must be predominantly research‑oriented and distinct from your doctoral thesis.

Submitting to the wrong agency may result in removal from the competition.
