At a time when democratic values and academic freedoms face increasing challenges, the Eurodoc ValDem Ambassador Programme 2026 emerges as a timely and impactful initiative. Organized by European Council of Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers, this programme is designed to equip early-career researchers with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to become ambassadors for democracy within academia and society.

Building on the success of its first edition, this second round offers a unique opportunity to critically explore the relationship between higher education, research, and democratic systems across Europe.

Programme Overview

The ValDem (Values and Democracy) Ambassador Programme aims to strengthen the role of researchers in promoting and safeguarding democratic principles. It focuses on how universities and research institutions contribute to democratic resilience, particularly in a context of growing democratic backsliding and threats to academic freedom.

Participants will gain both theoretical insights and practical advocacy skills, enabling them to actively promote democratic values in their institutions, research communities, and beyond.

Programme Structure

The ValDem Ambassador Programme is divided into two core thematic components:

1. The Democratic Mission of Research and Higher Education in Europe

This section explores how universities and research institutions contribute to democratic societies, including their role in fostering critical thinking, civic engagement, and knowledge production.

2. The Role of Democratic Public Authorities for Research in Europe

Participants will examine how public institutions and policies shape research ecosystems and support (or challenge) democratic values within academia.

Learning Experience

The programme features:

  • Lectures delivered by leading experts and stakeholders
  • Interdisciplinary discussions on democracy and research
  • A balance between theoretical frameworks and practical applications
  • Opportunities to develop advocacy strategies

Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how to act as democracy ambassadors within their professional and social environments.
