The Commonwealth Secretariat Communications Internships 2026 offer early-career professionals a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in global communications, digital media, and international development. Based in London, these six-month internships provide practical training, professional exposure, and the chance to contribute to high-level communications work across a network of 56 member countries.
About the Program
The Commonwealth Secretariat serves as the principal intergovernmental body supporting cooperation among its 56 member states, working to advance democracy, development, and respect for diversity. Its Communications Division plays a central role in promoting these values through strategic storytelling, media engagement, and digital content.
For 2026, the Secretariat is offering multiple internship opportunities within its Communications team, including a Communications Intern role and a Digital Communications Intern position. Both roles are designed to equip participants with practical skills in communications while contributing to impactful projects at an international level.
The internships run for six months and are based at Marlborough House in London. Interns will work closely with experienced professionals, supporting day-to-day communications activities while gaining exposure to global campaigns and initiatives, including preparations for major international events such as the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
Why This Opportunity Matters
Breaking into the communications field—particularly within international organizations—can be challenging without relevant experience. These internships address that gap by offering structured, hands-on learning within a globally recognized institution.
Participants gain insight into how international organizations communicate complex issues such as development, governance, and global cooperation. The experience also provides exposure to multicultural working environments, helping interns build cross-cultural communication skills that are highly valued in global careers.
Additionally, working within the Commonwealth Secretariat allows interns to contribute to meaningful initiatives that impact millions of people across member countries, making this more than just a professional opportunity—it is also a chance to support global development goals.
What Participants Will Gain
Interns will develop a broad set of practical skills that are directly applicable to careers in communications, media, and international development. They will gain experience in research, writing, and content creation, producing materials that are both informative and engaging.
Those in the Digital Communications role will build technical expertise in multimedia production, including photography, video editing, and graphic design. They will also gain hands-on experience managing digital platforms, creating content for websites and social media, and supporting online campaigns.
Across both roles, interns will strengthen their project management abilities by contributing to multiple initiatives simultaneously, including event planning and reporting. They will also learn how to analyze audience engagement and improve communication strategies based on data insights.
Equally important, participants will expand their professional networks by working with experienced communications professionals and engaging with stakeholders across different countries and sectors.
Successful candidates will be offered a structured internship experience offering a weekly stipend of £532.80.
Who Can Apply
The internships are open to early-career professionals and recent graduates in communications, journalism, or related fields. Candidates with up to two years of experience in communications, media, or public information roles are encouraged to apply.
Applicants should demonstrate strong writing, research, and organizational skills, along with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively. Familiarity with digital tools such as content management systems, design software, and social media platforms is an advantage, particularly for the Digital Communications role.
For the Digital Communications Intern position, applicants should also have practical skills in content creation, including photography, video production, and graphic design. Interns must be under the age of 30 at the time of application.
An understanding of international development issues and experience working in or with developing countries can further strengthen an application.
Eligible Areas
These internships are open to candidates from across Commonwealth countries and beyond. However, selected candidates must be able to work in London for the duration of the six-month program.
Application Process and Deadline
Interested applicants must submit their applications through the official Commonwealth Secretariat careers portal. The selection process typically involves a review of qualifications, skills, and relevant experience.
While specific deadlines may vary depending on the role, applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible due to the competitive nature of these internships.
