About the CIDER Pre-Doctoral Fellowship Program
The CIDER Pre-Doctoral Fellowship Program is an intensive, full-time program designed for post-baccalaureate candidates aiming to pursue a Ph.D. in Economics, Agricultural and Resource Economics, Development Studies, Public Policy, or a related field.
As a Pre-Doctoral Fellow, you will work closely with esteemed CIDER faculty on quantitative research and data analysis within development economics. Faculty members hiring this year include Jenny Aker, Chris Barrett, Heather Schofield, Joanna Upton, Martina Occelli, and Johannes Haushofer.
The role also provides access to enriching academic and professional development opportunities, such as seminars, workshops, and a vibrant community of scholars. Field research opportunities may be available for those with relevant language skills and a willingness to travel.
Key Responsibilities
- Support empirical research under the mentorship of faculty members.
- Analyze quantitative data and contribute to ongoing research projects.
- Engage in Cornell’s intellectual community through seminars and discussions.
- Foster an inclusive, respectful, and collaborative work environment.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree with 2–4 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination.
- Coursework in econometrics and statistics, along with proficiency in statistical software (e.g., Stata or R).
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Professional-level verbal, written, and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects effectively.
- Experience working with diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups.
Preferred:
- A degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) in economics, public policy, mathematics, statistics, or related fields.
- Research experience, such as a senior thesis.
- Skills in programming languages like Python, SQL, or ArcGIS.
- Proficiency in languages such as French, Spanish, Swahili, Tamil, or Portuguese.
