Tsinghua University (THU), one of China’s most prestigious institutions, has opened applications for its 2025 Master’s and Doctoral programs for international students. With 49 schools and departments offering degrees, THU provides a wide range of academic opportunities across disciplines. More than 30 Master’s and PhD programs are fully taught in English, while others are offered in Chinese or bilingually.

Master’s programs typically take 2–3 years, while Doctoral programs require 3–4 years. Students holding a Bachelor’s degree may also directly apply for certain Doctoral programs (4–5 years).


Required Qualifications for Tsinghua University

To apply for THU’s 2025 graduate programs, applicants must:

  • Be non-Chinese citizens with a valid ordinary passport.

  • Hold the required academic degree:

    • Master’s applicants: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

    • PhD applicants: Master’s degree (or apply directly with a Bachelor’s degree if eligible).

  • Meet health, character, and conduct requirements set by both the Chinese government and THU.

  • Demonstrate Chinese or English language proficiency according to the program’s requirements.

  • Meet any additional program-specific criteria for work experience or academic background.

Applicants must ensure they meet all academic and language requirements; failure to do so will lead to disqualification.


How to Apply

Applications must be submitted online through the Tsinghua application portal. Applicants should fill in all required information, upload documents, and pay the non-refundable application fee.

Important: Schwarzman Scholars and MBA applicants must apply through their respective separate portals.


Application Schedule (2025)

The general application period runs from September to February of the following year. Deadlines vary depending on the school or program, so applicants must check the “Remarks of Application” in the Program Catalog.

THU’s winter break runs from Jan 16, 2025 to Feb 12, 2025. The application system remains open, but document verification may be delayed.


Required Application Documents

Applicants must upload:

  1. Personal Statement
    (PhD applicants must also upload a brief research plan.)

  2. Degree Certificates + Degree Authentication

    • Overseas degrees must be authenticated by CSCSE.

    • Degrees from Chinese universities must be authenticated by CSSD.

  3. Academic Transcripts
    If GPA is not shown, provide an official GPA certification.

  4. Language Proficiency Scores
    Submit HSK or English test scores depending on the program.

  5. Two Academic Recommendation Letters

  6. Passport Bio Page
    Additional documents required for applicants of Chinese origin who changed nationality.

  7. Additional documents, if required by specific programs.


Evaluation & Admission

Admission is based on:

  • Review of application documents

  • Comprehensive assessment, usually an interview

  • Overall academic and professional potential

Successful applicants will receive an Admission Certificate and can check their status through the application system.


Scholarships

Tsinghua offers competitive funding opportunities for outstanding international students:

  • Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS)
    Covers tuition, accommodation or subsidy, stipend, and medical insurance.

  • Tuition Scholarships
    Including the Beijing Government Scholarship, which covers tuition and insurance.
    These are annual and competitive.

Accommodation

On-campus dormitory rooms are limited and assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Students who cannot secure on-campus housing must arrange off-campus accommodation independently.


Visa & Registration

Admitted students must apply for an X1 student visa using:

  • Passport

  • Admission Notice

  • JW201/JW202 Form

  • Medical Examination Report

Students must arrive in China with an X1 visa and apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days of arrival.

Registration usually takes place in late August or early September. All students must undergo qualification verification upon arrival.


Costs (in RMB)

  • Application Fee: 800 RMB

  • Tuition Fees: Vary by program (see Tuition Fees 2025 list)

  • Insurance: 800 RMB/year

  • Accommodation:

    • 40 RMB/day (double room)

    • 30 RMB/day (triple room)
