The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Alliance has officially launched its first global call for the creation of MIL Alliance Chapters. This landmark initiative marks a major step toward strengthening collaboration, inclusivity, and localized action in media and information literacy across the world.

The MIL Alliance is designed as a “network of networks,” bringing together experts, institutions, and organizations committed to advancing media and information literacy. With this new chapter system, UNESCO is expanding opportunities for members to organize into strategic sub-groups based on shared interests, regions, or thematic priorities.

These chapters will enable more effective, context-specific interventions to address misinformation, improve digital literacy, and strengthen responsible communication globally.

What is the UNESCO MIL Alliance Chapter Initiative?

The MIL Alliance Chapter system is a structural innovation introduced by UNESCO to improve how its global members collaborate and implement media literacy initiatives.

Key Purpose of the Chapters

The chapters are designed to:

  • Strengthen regional and thematic collaboration among MIL Alliance members
  • Promote localized solutions to media and information literacy challenges
  • Overcome linguistic and cultural barriers in information access
  • Support advocacy for institutionalizing MIL policies with governments
  • Increase outreach to underrepresented communities
  • Foster collective ownership of MIL initiatives worldwide

These chapters represent an operational expansion of the MIL Alliance, making its global mission more practical, decentralized, and inclusive.

Why This Initiative Matters Globally

Media and information literacy has become essential in an era dominated by digital content, misinformation, and rapid technological change. UNESCO’s initiative directly addresses these challenges by empowering local and regional actors.

Major global impacts include:

  • Improved ability to identify misinformation and fake news
  • Stronger education systems integrating media literacy
  • Empowerment of youth as critical thinkers and responsible communicators
  • Enhanced policy advocacy at national and regional levels
  • Better collaboration across continents and cultural contexts

This initiative is particularly significant for regions like Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and other underserved areas where access to structured media literacy programs is still developing.

Structure and Governance of MIL Alliance Chapters

The MIL Alliance operates under a structured governance system to ensure transparency and accountability.

Key Governance Features

  • Chapters are reviewed and validated by the Global Board
  • The Global Board provides strategic oversight and coordination
  • UNESCO works closely with the Board in guiding implementation
  • Chapters must meet eligibility criteria and submit structured proposals
  • Reporting and development of chapters are continuously monitored

The Global Board was recently established through a global election process and now serves as the main decision-making body for the Alliance.
