Climate change is recognized as one of the most urgent and complex challenges facing humanity today. Leading scientists, the United Nations, and governments around the world have consistently warned about the escalating risks to human lives and the planet due to the accelerating effects of climate change. Described by many as a crisis multiplier, climate change affects every aspect of society—from health and food security to migration and global stability.
Yet despite overwhelming scientific consensus, many people continue to deny or downplay the reality of climate change. A significant reason for this lies in the lack of access to accurate and reliable information, compounded by the spread of misinformation and disinformation, particularly in online spaces. In today’s digital era, where much of the population relies on online platforms for information, combating false narratives and ensuring equitable access to credible knowledge is critical.
To address this pressing issue, UNESCO, in collaboration with the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP), has developed a free online course titled Navigating Climate Information with Media and Information Literacy (MIL). This innovative initiative aims to empower global citizens with the skills, competencies, and ethical awareness needed to navigate today’s digital and information landscapes effectively.
Purpose of the Course
The course is designed to build Media and Information Literacy (MIL) competencies, helping participants critically engage with climate information and responsibly navigate online environments. By doing so, it contributes directly to UNESCO’s Global Roadmap for Information as a Public Good in the Face of the Climate Crisis.
The course seeks to:
-
Equip individuals with the ability to recognize and counter climate disinformation.
-
Foster a well-informed and proactive society capable of making ethical and sustainable decisions.
-
Provide practical skills to navigate digital information environments while combating the decline of trust in media and technology.
