This highly competitive fellowship supports outstanding PhD and Postdoctoral candidates who are passionate about developing innovative solutions to technology and information systems challenges affecting the African continent.

Hosted by one of Africa’s leading universities, the University of Cape Town, the fellowship is designed to nurture the next generation of researchers, innovators, and academic leaders in Computer Science and Information Systems. Successful candidates will join a vibrant network of scholars and researchers working on groundbreaking projects with direct relevance to African communities and global technological advancement.

About the HPI Research School at UCT

The HPI Research School at UCT is affiliated with the School of Information Technology at the University of Cape Town and receives support from the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering. Since its establishment, the research school has built a strong reputation for advancing research that addresses real-world challenges through innovative computing and information systems solutions.

Researchers within the programme focus on technologies and systems that can improve lives across developing regions, particularly within Africa. Fellowship Benefits

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the fellowship, applicants must meet specific academic and language requirements.

Academic Requirements

For PhD Fellowship Applicants:

  • Must possess a Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related discipline.
  • Must demonstrate strong academic performance.
  • Must have completed a high-quality dissertation or thesis.

For Postdoctoral Fellowship Applicants:

  • Must possess a PhD in a relevant field.
  • Must demonstrate a strong research background and publication potential.

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose previous education was not conducted in English may be required to provide evidence of English proficiency through:

  • TOEFL score of at least 570 (paper-based) or 230 (computer-based), or
  • IELTS overall band score of 7.0 with no section below 6.0

Applicants who studied in English are generally exempt from this requirement.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews and required to arrange three academic reference letters.
