Lloyd’s Register Foundation has officially launched the 2025 Global Safety Evidence Centre funding call, inviting proposals from academic institutions, nonprofits, and industry partners worldwide to support cutting-edge research aimed at improving global safety outcomes. This initiative aligns with the Foundation’s 2024–2029 strategy to advance knowledge and practice in safety science and workplace safety.

About the Global Safety Evidence Centre

The Global Safety Evidence Centre is a new hub designed to gather, create, and communicate evidence on what works to make people and infrastructure safer. It addresses urgent global safety challenges such as workplace hazards, unsafe infrastructure, and lack of high-quality evidence in safety management. The Centre’s early focus is on two main areas:

  • Safe Work: Investigating workplace safety issues, especially in high-risk sectors and informal work environments.

  • Safety Science: Defining and measuring safety more precisely across sectors like energy, transport, and manufacturing, and evaluating the effectiveness of safety interventions.

Who Can Apply

Eligible applicants include:

  • Academic institutions and research organisations

  • Non-profit entities and NGOs

  • Industry partners with research capacity

Applications from across the globe are welcome, with special encouragement given to proposals involving Lloyd’s Register Foundation’s Ocean Centre countries—Brazil, Kenya, Ghana, Bangladesh, India, the Philippines, and Indonesia—and other coastal communities with similar safety and societal challenges.

What the Foundation Is Looking For

Proposals should present ambitious, evidence-based projects addressing one or more of the following:

  • Reviewing and synthesising global safety evidence

  • Evaluating effectiveness of specific safety interventions

  • Exploring stakeholder knowledge and needs in occupational safety

  • Developing scalable, context-sensitive safety solutions

  • Enhancing safety data infrastructure or analysis

Applications should feature well-designed research methodologies, a clear theory of change, and alignment with the Foundation’s mission to engineer a safer world.

Projects may focus on any of the following themes:

  • Safe Work Environments (especially in informal sectors)

  • Safety Science terminology and measurement

  • Occupational safety for vulnerable worker groups

  • Policy-driven research that influences regulatory frameworks

Funding and Duration

Grant awards will range between £100,000 and £250,000 for projects running up to two years. The Foundation will also consider proposals with smaller or larger budgets, especially those that span multiple research types, geographic regions, or are co-funded through other sources.

Application Process

The funding call follows a structured, three-stage application process:

  1. Register on the Flexigrant portal – Begin by creating an account on the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Flexigrant system.

  2. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) – Available starting June 2025, EOIs must be submitted by 17 September 2025 (23:59 BST). Applicants will submit a project summary outlining the issue, approach, expected outcomes, and budget.

  3. Full Proposal Submission (Invitation Only) – Shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit full proposals by 12 December 2025.

A webinar for applicants will be held on 26 June 2025 (11:00–12:00 BST) to explain the funding call in more detail and answer applicant questions.

Selection and Timeline

Proposals will be reviewed in five steps:

  • Initial assessment by Lloyd’s Register Foundation team

  • Expert peer review

  • Final decision by the Foundation Leadership Team

  • Notifications by March 2026

  • Projects expected to start by April 2026

Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of relevance, impact potential, methodological soundness, feasibility, and stakeholder engagement.

What Grantees Receive

Successful applicants will benefit from:

  • Financial support of up to £250,000

  • Access to a global network of safety experts and practitioners

  • Dissemination of research findings through the Foundation’s Global Safety Evidence Centre and partner platforms

  • Strategic support and collaboration opportunities with Lloyd’s Register Foundation and affiliated organisations
