The AI x Media Literacy Dialogue Fund 2026, hosted by DW Akademie and supported by German development cooperation, is a unique opportunity for organizations across Southern Africa to design, test, and implement innovative projects at the intersection of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). This initiative empowers organizations to explore how AI is reshaping media consumption, digital well-being, critical thinking, and community engagement—while equipping them with funding, expert coaching, and a regional network of collaborators.

Applications close on 15 June 2026, and selected organizations will receive up to 2,000 Euros in funding, along with structured training, mentorship, and participation in a regional innovation ecosystem.

About the AI x Media Literacy Dialogue Fund

The Dialogue Fund supports organizations that want to explore how Media and Information Literacy can help communities navigate the rapidly evolving AI landscape. As AI increasingly influences identity, relationships, emotional well-being, and access to information, MIL becomes essential for helping people—especially youth—engage responsibly and critically with digital technologies.

DW Akademie, Deutsche Welle’s center for international media development, leads this initiative. Their mission is to strengthen freedom of expression, access to reliable information, and constructive dialogue worldwide.

What Types of Projects Are Eligible?

The Dialogue Fund welcomes a wide range of creative, educational, and community-centered ideas. Eligible projects may include:

  • Educational campaigns and materials, such as short video series, posters, or visual explainers
  • Youth-focused educational activities, including workshops, training sessions, or school-based programs
  • Interactive content, such as games, clickable explainers, or digital storytelling tools
  • Educational research and dialogue, exploring how AI affects communities and how MIL can address these shifts

Projects using vernacular languages are strongly encouraged, as are ideas that promote reliable, independent information and community well-being.

How the Fellowship Works: A Step-by-Step Process

The Dialogue Fund follows a structured, supportive process designed to help organizations refine and implement their ideas effectively.

1. Application Phase

Organizations pitch their idea through the official application form. A selection panel reviews submissions and chooses the most promising concepts.

2. Masterclass (Virtual)

Selected teams participate in a virtual Masterclass during the first week of July. This session includes:

  • Expert-led insights into MIL, AI literacy, and digital well-being
  • Discussions on how AI shapes identity, relationships, and emotional health
  • Exploration of MIL competencies needed for healthy digital engagement

The Masterclass is interactive and tailored to the ideas submitted by participating teams.

3. Idea Lab (Virtual Workshop)

Held in the second week of July, the Idea Lab allows teams to:

  • Present their ideas to other innovative organizations in the region
  • Apply human-centered design approaches
  • Refine their project plans based on feedback and collaboration

4. Implementation Phase

From 15 July to 15 October 2026, selected organizations implement their projects with:

  • Up to 2,000 Euros in funding
  • Ongoing coaching and technical support
  • A dedicated counterpart for feedback, reflection, and guidance

5. Feedback, Exchange, and Showcase

Participants join a regional network of MIL innovators and present their final projects during Global MIL Week (24–30 October 2026).

What Is the Masterclass?

The Masterclass is a focused, expert-led session that introduces participants to:

  • Media and Information Literacy
  • AI literacy and its societal impact
  • Digital well-being and mental health in the age of AI
  • How AI influences people’s sense of self, relationships, and emotional balance

The session is interactive, discussion-based, and designed to help teams strengthen their ideas before implementation.

What Is the Idea Lab?

The Idea Lab is a collaborative virtual workshop where teams:

  • Present their project concepts
  • Receive feedback from peers and experts
  • Use human-centered design to refine their approach
  • Strengthen their implementation plan

This session ensures that each project is tailored to the needs of its intended audience.

How the Financial Fellowship Works

Selected organizations receive:

  • Up to 2,000 Euros in funding
  • Coaching and technical support
  • A first installment upon signing the fellowship agreement
  • A final installment after submitting the final report and supporting materials

Funding may be used for prototyping, production, research, or other project-related expenses.

What Applicants Need to Participate

To be eligible and successful, applicants must demonstrate:

  • Commitment from all team members for the full project duration
  • Participation of at least two team members in the Masterclass
  • Participation in the virtual Idea Lab
  • A clear idea for a MIL & AI product relevant to their audience
  • Commitment to ethical, reliable, and independent information
  • Access to a smartphone or laptop for virtual sessions
  • Willingness to engage in coaching, feedback, and peer dialogue

  • Be at least 21 years old
