The sponsor must be an individual at the administering organisation and must hold an established post, or an honorary academic appointment, there for the duration of the award.

• Ensure that the research environment supports successful completion of the project; and
• Confirm appropriate workload expectations.

If an award holder plans to work for more than three months outside their administering organisation, an additional sponsor will also be required at that location to guarantee the necessary space and resources during the visit.

Mentor Requirement

Researchers can involve collaborators where appropriate.

Collaborators can support project delivery without leading a specific component of the research.

Their contribution could include:

• Sharing research facilities;
• Providing access to datasets;
• Providing access to clinical records;
• Providing tools or other resources;
• Connecting researchers with organisations working with lived-experience experts;
• Providing expertise relating to research in different countries;
• Providing specialist subject knowledge;

Collaborators do not have to satisfy the lead applicant’s eligibility requirements and are not subject to a minimum research-time commitment.

They cannot receive a salary or compensation for the time they spend on the project. However, applicants may request eligible funding for relevant expenses directly associated with the collaborator’s research contribution, such as grant-related travel, materials and consumables.

Coapplicants

Coapplicants are not accepted for the Wellcome Early-Career Awards.

Who Cannot Apply?

2. They have already submitted an application to this scheme and are waiting for a decision.
3. They currently hold, previously held or have accepted an offer for an equivalent award at the same career stage.

An applicant with an existing tenured salaried post may only relinquish that post to accept an Early-Career Award if their existing position is not research-based.

Short-Term Funding That May Be Permitted

Awards normally last for approximately five years, providing recipients with significant time to deliver innovative research while strengthening their technical expertise, networks, management skills and capacity for independent research leadership.

The opportunity is open across a remarkably broad range of disciplines, from STEM and experimental medicine to clinical research, public health, humanities and social sciences, provided the proposed work falls within Wellcome’s Discovery Research remit.

Applications for the upcoming round open on 25 August 2026, and there is no fixed application deadline because applications can be submitted throughout the year.

However, prospective applicants should pay particular attention to the geographical eligibility change taking effect on 29 October 2026. Applications submitted on or before 28 October 2026 will be assessed under the current location requirements, while applications submitted from 29 October 2026 will be subject to the new geographical criteria.

Interested researchers should carefully assess their career-stage eligibility, postdoctoral experience, proposed research, administering organisation and institutional approval requirements before submitting an application.
