As technology continues to shape every aspect of modern society, many nonprofit organizations and social impact initiatives still struggle with outdated systems, limited digital infrastructure, and a lack of access to strategic technology expertise. To help bridge this gap, Tech Matters has launched an exciting remote fellowship opportunity for professionals passionate about using technology to create meaningful global change.

The Tech for Good Project Fellow position offers candidates around the world the opportunity to work directly with renowned social entrepreneur Jim Fruchterman, founder and CEO of Tech Matters, in advancing technology-driven solutions for some of humanity’s most urgent challenges.

The fellowship is designed for individuals who want to move beyond traditional commercial technology work and contribute to social innovation, ethical technology, and large-scale systems change.

About Tech Matters

Tech Matters is a nonprofit organization focused on leveraging technology to support the social sector and drive scalable positive social impact.

The organization works with nonprofits, innovators, and mission-driven partners to build technology solutions capable of addressing major societal issues affecting millions of people worldwide.

Unlike many commercial technology companies focused primarily on profit, Tech Matters concentrates on ensuring that technology serves vulnerable and underserved populations that are often overlooked by the mainstream tech industry.

The organization is especially known for:

  • Open-source software initiatives
  • Technology solutions for nonprofits
  • Data governance innovation
  • Ethical AI experimentation
  • Systems-change technology projects
  • Social impact capacity-building

A Fellowship Focused on Technology for Humanity

The Tech for Good Project Fellow will work directly with Jim Fruchterman, a globally recognized leader in technology and social innovation.

Fruchterman is:

  • A MacArthur Fellow
  • A Skoll Award recipient
  • A long-time advocate for technology-driven social impact

The fellowship aims to support the broader mission of ensuring technology better serves the “90% of humanity” often neglected by the commercial tech ecosystem.

This is not a standard technical fellowship focused solely on software development. Instead, it combines:

  • Project management
  • Research
  • Data analysis
  • Policy thinking
  • Social impact strategy
  • AI and governance experimentation
  • Communications and writing

The role is ideal for professionals interested in the intersection of:

  • Technology
  • Ethics
  • Nonprofit innovation
  • AI governance
  • Public interest technology
  • Systems transformation

Major Fellowship Projects and Responsibilities

Depending on the fellow’s expertise and the number of fellows selected, participants may contribute to one or more major initiatives.

1. Expanding the Better Deal for Data Initiative

One major area of work involves helping nonprofits adopt and implement the Better Deal for Data framework.

This initiative focuses on:

  • Ethical data governance
  • Responsible data stewardship
  • Practical standards for nonprofit data management
  • Building trust in digital systems used by social organizations

The fellow may work directly with nonprofits adopting these standards while supporting broader sector-wide implementation efforts.

2. Improving AI and Search Engine Responses on Critical Social Issues

Another highly innovative component of the fellowship involves experimenting with methods for improving how large language models (LLMs) and search engines respond to critical social challenges.

Initial efforts are expected to focus on:

  • Preventing child sexual abuse
  • Improving information reliability
  • Ethical AI responses
  • Public-interest search and AI systems

This work places fellows at the center of emerging conversations around responsible artificial intelligence and technology ethics.

3. Supporting an Open Global Course on Technology for Good

The fellow may also assist in developing an open-access educational course based on Jim Fruchterman’s recent book, Technology for Good.

The course will:

  • Become freely available globally
  • Be released under a Creative Commons license
  • Launch publicly in September 2026
  • Focus on practical technology for social impact

This initiative reflects Tech Matters’ broader commitment to democratizing knowledge and expanding access to mission-driven technology education worldwide.

Fellowship Structure and Duration

The position is fully remote, allowing applicants from around the world to participate.

Fellowship Duration

  • Approximately 6 to 12 months
  • Flexible starting dates

The fellowship is designed to accommodate professionals seeking meaningful career transitions into the nonprofit or social impact sector.

According to Tech Matters, many past fellows have successfully moved from commercial business and technology careers toward purpose-driven work through similar opportunities.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary

  • US-based fellows: US$70,000–US$80,000
  • International fellows: Compensation adjusted according to local conditions

Additional Benefits

  • Flexible working hours
  • Remote work environment
  • Early responsibility and ownership
  • Small and collaborative team culture
  • Opportunity to work closely with internationally recognized leaders in social innovation

For fellows based in the United States, health and related insurance coverage is included.

Who Should Apply?

Tech Matters is looking for candidates who combine technical understanding with strong communication and social impact awareness.

Ideal applicants are individuals who:

  • Care deeply about technology for social good
  • Enjoy collaborative and mission-driven environments
  • Thrive in flexible, early-stage organizations
  • Can communicate clearly and empathetically
  • Are comfortable working remotely

Candidates should also align with Tech Matters’ core organizational values:

  • Impact
  • Empathy
  • Collaboration

Diversity and Inclusion Commitment

Tech Matters strongly emphasizes inclusive hiring and encourages applications from individuals from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds.

The organization specifically welcomes applications from:

  • People of color
  • LGBTQ+ individuals
  • Persons with disabilities
  • Diverse professional and cultural backgrounds

The organization also recognizes that strong candidates may not meet every listed requirement and encourages applicants with relevant passion and transferable experience to still apply.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit:

  • A PDF version of their resume
  • A personalized cover letter

The cover letter is considered a particularly important component of the application process.

Tech Matters specifically asks applicants to explain:

  • Why the role resonates with them
  • Why they are interested in technology for social good
  • Why the organization’s mission matters to them

Applications should be submitted via email.

Why This Fellowship Stands Out

At a time when conversations around artificial intelligence, ethical technology, and social innovation are rapidly evolving, this fellowship offers a rare opportunity to contribute to high-impact global initiatives while working alongside leaders shaping the future of public-interest technology.

Rather than focusing solely on profit-driven innovation, the fellowship prioritizes:

  • Human-centered technology
  • Ethical systems design
  • Nonprofit digital transformation
  • Global accessibility
  • Sustainable social impact

For professionals seeking purpose-driven careers that combine technology expertise with meaningful global impact, the Tech for Good Project Fellowship represents a unique and influential opportunity.
