The Peace Corps is recruiting motivated individuals to serve as Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Teachers in Benin. This rewarding opportunity is ideal for individuals who are passionate about education, youth empowerment, and global service. TEFL Teachers will teach English in middle and high schools in rural communities, co-teaching alongside local Beninese teachers, while contributing to educational development and cross-cultural exchange.

About the Program

The TEFL program in Benin focuses on improving students’ English proficiency and enhancing teaching capacity in rural schools. Volunteers collaborate with local teachers to plan and deliver English lessons, create inclusive learning environments, and promote student-centered teaching practices. Volunteers will also engage in after-school activities such as English clubs, spelling bees, and leadership programs.

This project offers a unique cultural immersion experience, combining language learning, community engagement, and personal growth. TEFL Volunteers in Benin also benefit from the Peace Corps’ TEFL Certificate Program—a globally recognized credential involving over 120 hours of training and two years of supervised teaching.

Key Responsibilities

  • Co-teach English in middle and high school classrooms with local teachers in Benin

  • Develop lesson plans, lead activities, and assess student performance

  • Organize extracurricular activities such as English clubs and student competitions

  • Support girls’ education and empowerment through culturally appropriate programs

  • Promote cross-cultural understanding and represent U.S. culture

Eligibility Criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline

  • Strong desire to teach English and engage with youth

  • Commitment to a 27-month service period (includes training and service)

  • U.S. citizenship

  • Willingness to learn French and a local language

Desired Skills

  • Experience teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or leading youth programs

  • Familiarity with lesson planning or educational outreach

  • Enthusiasm for working in diverse and underserved communities

Living Conditions in Benin
Volunteers are placed in rural communities and live in modest housing, often with access to basic amenities. French is the official language, but local languages are widely spoken. Volunteers are encouraged to adapt to local cultural norms and dress standards. Daily transportation is primarily by walking or local vehicles, and communication may vary depending on the site.

Language Requirements
There are no pre-requisite language requirements. However, French is essential for professional work, and Peace Corps provides intensive language training. Volunteers are also encouraged to learn local languages for greater community engagement.

Couples Information
Benin welcomes heterosexual couples, provided each partner qualifies for a different sector:

  • Community Health Promoter

Couples live and serve in the same community following training.

Start Dates
Positions are available through 2027, and selected applicants will participate in pre-departure and in-country training prior to beginning service.
