Common Good Cyber Fund 2025: Global Support for Nonprofits Protecting Internet Security
A powerful new global initiative has been launched to fortify cybersecurity and protect digital civil liberties. On June 23, 2025, the Internet Society (ISOC) and the Global Cyber Alliance (GCA), acting on behalf of the Common Good Cyber secretariat, announced the creation of the Common Good Cyber Fund. This pioneering initiative provides targeted funding to nonprofits working at the intersection of cybersecurity and civil society protection, filling a critical global gap.
Background
As cyber threats increase in frequency and sophistication, civil society groups—including journalists, human rights defenders, and advocacy organizations—are increasingly exposed to digital surveillance, cyberattacks, and transnational repression. Despite being on the front lines of defense, nonprofit cybersecurity organizations are often underfunded and under-resourced.
The Common Good Cyber Fund directly addresses this challenge by supporting nonprofits that provide core cybersecurity infrastructure and services vital to protecting high-risk communities and strengthening the global digital ecosystem.
What Is the Common Good Cyber Fund?
This is the first global funding initiative dedicated specifically to nonprofit cybersecurity efforts for the public good. The Fund focuses on nonprofits that:
- Maintain essential digital infrastructure (e.g., DNS, routing, threat intelligence)
- Offer cybersecurity tools, incident response, and training to at-risk civil society actors
- Provide free-to-use platforms and services that help raise the global cybersecurity baseline
These nonprofits serve as a quiet but essential force—operating in the background to shield billions of users and preserve a secure, open, and trustworthy internet.
Who Is Behind the Initiative?
The Common Good Cyber secretariat comprises a coalition of leading global organizations, including:
- Global Cyber Alliance (GCA)
- Internet Society (ISOC)
- Cyber Threat Alliance
- CyberPeace Institute
- Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST)
- Global Forum on Cyber Expertise (GFCE)
- Institute for Security and Technology (IST)
- Shadow server Foundation
Each of these groups brings deep expertise in cyber policy, defense, response coordination, and community outreach.
International Support
In a joint statement on June 15, 2025, the Prime Ministers of Canada and the United Kingdom committed to co-invest in the Joint Canada-UK Common Good Cyber Fund. Shortly after, during the G7 Summit in Alberta, all G7 leaders backed the initiative as a means of combating transnational repression and protecting democratic civil space online.
Application and Timeline
While the Fund has been officially launched, the granting and application details are still being finalized. More information on eligibility criteria, application timelines, and funding cycles will be announced in the coming months.

Who Can Apply?
The Fund is global in scope. Nonprofits from all continents involved in cybersecurity, civil society protection, and internet infrastructure are expected to be eligible.
Why This Fund Matters
“Common Good Cyber represents a pivotal step toward a stronger, more inclusive cybersecurity ecosystem,” says Philip Reitinger, CEO of the Global Cyber Alliance. “By strengthening nonprofits, we help secure the digital frontlines and empower the most vulnerable.”
“Cybersecurity is no longer optional—it is a public good,” said Sally Wentworth, President and CEO of the Internet Society. “We are supporting nonprofits that defend us all.”
By building local resilience and investing in the sustainability of nonprofit cybersecurity providers, the Common Good Cyber Fund supports not just isolated projects, but the foundations of a safer internet.
Conclusion
The Common Good Cyber Fund is more than a grant—it is a commitment to global digital equity. By supporting nonprofits that secure infrastructure, offer direct protection, and train civil society defenders, the Fund ensures that the internet remains safe, open, and secure for all.
