Call for Applications – In-Depth Online Biodiversity Journalism Training for Young Journalists in West Africa

Young journalists across West Africa have a powerful opportunity to build their environmental reporting skills and make a meaningful impact on biodiversity storytelling. The Centre for Climate Change and Food Security (CCCFS), through its non-profit journalism initiative GJESHA, in collaboration with The North Journals, is now accepting applications for its in-depth online biodiversity journalism training programme.

This initiative is specifically open to passionate and early-career journalists based in Ghana, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Liberia. The training is tailored to equip selected participants with the skills and tools to effectively report on biodiversity and conservation issues through accurate, engaging, and solution-oriented storytelling.

About the Programme

The GJESHA Biodiversity Journalism Training is a unique capacity-building opportunity focused on promoting environmental journalism in Africa. As global concern about biodiversity loss continues to grow, the need for informed reporting that contextualises the issues and connects with local communities has never been more critical.

Through this programme, young and aspiring journalists will undergo a structured training process, led by professionals with extensive experience in environmental reporting and biodiversity communication. The sessions are designed to bridge the gap between science, storytelling, and policy, helping participants turn complex biodiversity challenges into compelling narratives for diverse audiences.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Be a citizen or resident of Ghana, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, or Liberia.

• Be a young or early-career journalist, aged approximately 18–35 (students and recent graduates with journalism interest are encouraged to apply).

• Demonstrate interest or experience in storytelling, journalism, or media production.

• Have a strong passion for environmental issues, especially biodiversity and conservation.

• Be able to commit to the full duration of the online training programme.

• Have access to a stable internet connection and a device for participating in virtual sessions.

Prior experience in environmental reporting is not required, but a willingness to learn and engage is essential.
