Announcing the Rust Foundation Maintainers Fund: Supporting the People Behind Rust

The Rust Foundation is excited to launch the Rust Foundation Maintainers Fund, a new initiative dedicated to providing long-term, transparent support for the developers who make the Rust programming language possible. This fund aims to ensure that the people behind Rust can continue their vital work in maintaining and evolving the language.

 

Purpose

The Rust Foundation Maintainers Fund was created in response to the growing sustainability challenges facing open-source maintainers. With increasing demands on Rust’s maintainers, the fund seeks to provide the financial stability and resources needed to ensure the continued health of the project. This initiative will address the needs of maintainers and contribute to the future success of Rust by supporting critical tasks such as code reviews, upgrades, and refactorings.

 

Approach to Work

In collaboration with the Rust Project Leadership Council and Project Directors, the fund will focus on providing reliable, ongoing support to maintainers. The Rust Foundation will:

• Provide reliable support for Rust’s maintainers and contributors

• Collaborate with the Rust Project Leadership Council to identify high-impact priorities and direct support where it’s needed most

• Ensure transparency in how the fund is allocated and used to advance Rust’s growt

This initiative will operate under the governance framework shared between the Rust Foundation and the Rust Project, ensuring alignment with the project’s priorities.

 

Next Steps

The Rust Foundation Maintainers Fund will continue to evolve over the coming months. The Foundation is working closely with the Leadership Council to define the fund’s structure, identify key priorities, and secure contributions. Updates regarding funding processes, eligibility, and timelines will be shared as the work progresses.
