The growing urgency of addressing mental health challenges across Africa has led to the creation of transformative leadership initiatives. One of the most impactful among them is the 12th Mental Health Leadership & Advocacy Course, organized under the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention Mental Health Leadership Programme (MHLP) in collaboration with The American University in Cairo.

Set to take place from 10–22 May 2026 in Cairo, Egypt, this prestigious program is designed to equip emerging leaders with the skills, knowledge, and networks needed to transform mental health systems across the African continent.

Why This Course Matters for Africa’s Mental Health Future

Mental health remains one of the most under-addressed public health challenges in Africa. Limited resources, stigma, and policy gaps continue to hinder progress. The MHLP directly tackles these issues by preparing a new generation of leaders capable of influencing:

  • National mental health policies
  • Legislative reforms
  • Community-based interventions
  • Health system strengthening

Through a public health and human rights lens, participants gain a comprehensive understanding of how to design and implement impactful mental health strategies.

About the Mental Health Leadership Programme (MHLP)

The Mental Health Leadership Programme (MHLP) is a flagship three-year initiative by Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. It focuses on building leadership capacity across Africa’s health sector by:

  • Promoting innovative approaches to mental health care
  • Encouraging cross-sector collaboration
  • Supporting advocacy at local, national, and continental levels
  • Strengthening evidence-based policymaking

Participants in this course become part of a powerful network of professionals working to reshape mental health systems across Africa.

Participants will leave with the tools needed to design impactful mental health initiatives and advocate for systemic change.
