Are you passionate about policy influencing, public affairs, and creating a better future for children and young people in the UK? The National Children’s Bureau (NCB) is hiring a Policy and Public Affairs Officer to support its external advocacy and engagement work from its London office.

This is a permanent full-time role with flexible hybrid working (minimum two days per week in-person). The ideal candidate will be a skilled communicator and researcher with experience in policy analysis, stakeholder engagement, and influencing within government and the voluntary sector.

About the Role

Position Title: Policy and Public Affairs Officer
Contract Type: Permanent, Full-Time
Location: London Fields, Mentmore Terrace (hybrid: 2 days/week in-person)
Directorate: External Affairs
Reports To: Policy and Public Affairs Manager
Salary Band: Band 4 (Remuneration details TBC)

This role supports NCB’s policy influencing and public affairs activity, contributing to high-impact campaigns, policy reports, and consultations. You’ll help ensure that children’s rights and lived experiences are central to national and local policy discussions.


Key Responsibilities

  • Build relationships with parliamentarians, government officials, and policy influencers
  • Draft high-quality policy papers, responses to consultations, briefings, blogs, and external communications
  • Represent NCB at meetings, events, and policy roundtables
  • Monitor developments in child-related policy areas and respond strategically
  • Communicate complex policy issues clearly to a range of stakeholders
  • Champion the voices of children, young people, and parents in shaping public policy
  • Support communications and fundraising teams with aligned messaging and proposals

Ideal Candidate Profile

Essential skills and experience:

  • Proven experience in public affairs, policy analysis, or advocacy
  • Excellent writing skills with a track record of producing policy briefings, reports, and external publications
  • Strong communication skills—confident engaging with everyone from youth groups to policymakers
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion practices
  • Knowledge of UK political and legislative systems
  • Strong IT and digital literacy
  • Willingness to travel occasionally and work flexible hours when required
