The Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC) has launched One Country, One Project 2026, a Commonwealth-wide initiative designed to recognise and showcase impactful youth-led projects that are responding to real challenges in communities.

The initiative is being launched around International Youth Day 2026, observed annually on 12 August. The United Nations has designated the 2026 theme as “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” highlighting the shared aspirations of young people across different countries and communities, including the desire for opportunity, meaningful participation, decent work, dignity and a sustainable future.

What Is One Country, One Project?

One Country, One Project is an initiative of the Commonwealth Youth Council, the official representative body of young people across the Commonwealth’s 56 member states.

According to the CYC, the initiative was developed around a simple principle: global problems require local solutions. The programme seeks to work with National Youth Councils and youth leaders in Commonwealth member countries to identify and support locally designed projects that benefit young people.

For the 2026 call, youth-led organisations across the Commonwealth are invited to register projects that will be implemented between August and September 2026.

This creates an opportunity for organisations that are already working on community challenges—or are ready to implement a project during this period—to bring their work to the attention of a wider Commonwealth audience.

Who Can Apply?

The opportunity is intended for youth-led organisations across Commonwealth countries.

Organisations should have a project that addresses a genuine challenge within their community and that can be implemented during the designated August–September 2026 period.

The initiative is particularly relevant to youth organisations working on practical community solutions, social development, youth empowerment, employment, education, climate action, innovation, entrepreneurship, inclusion and other issues affecting young people.

The CYC’s broader programme description explains that the initiative will involve collaboration with National Youth Councils and youth leaders in member countries.

What Kind of Projects Are Relevant?

The initiative is focused on impactful, youth-led projects, rather than simply ideas that have not yet been put into practice.

This means organisations should think about projects that can produce a clear and demonstrable benefit within their communities.

Potential examples could include projects addressing:

  • Youth unemployment and employability
  • Entrepreneurship and economic empowerment
  • Education and skills development
  • Climate action and environmental sustainability
  • Digital inclusion and technology
  • Community health and wellbeing
  • Social inclusion and equality
  • Food security and sustainable livelihoods
  • Community development
  • Innovation and locally driven solutions

The important consideration is not simply the size of the project, but the problem it addresses, the people it serves, what is implemented and the impact that can be demonstrated.

Why This Opportunity Matters

Youth-led organisations are often closest to the challenges affecting their communities. They understand local realities and can develop solutions that respond directly to those circumstances.

This approach also fits closely with the focus of International Youth Day 2026, which recognises that young people experience different social, economic and geographic realities while sharing common aspirations. The UN specifically highlights youth innovation and the importance of practical, creative solutions to local and global challenges.

One Country, One Project therefore provides a platform for youth organisations to demonstrate that young people are not only beneficiaries of development programmes but also designers, implementers and leaders of solutions.

Recognition and Commonwealth Best Project Award

Following implementation, projects will be assessed based on their demonstrated impact.

Outstanding projects will receive recognition at the country level and may be considered for the Commonwealth Best Project Award 2026.

This gives participating organisations an opportunity to gain recognition beyond their immediate community and potentially have their work highlighted at a major Commonwealth gathering.

The award is expected to be presented during CHOGM Week in Antigua and Barbuda.

The 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting will take place in St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, from 1–4 November 2026. It will bring together representatives from the Commonwealth’s 56 member countries, including government, business, civil society and youth organisations.

Connection to Commonwealth Youth Engagement

The initiative comes at an important time for youth participation within the Commonwealth.

The 2026 Commonwealth Youth Forum (CYF) will also take place in Antigua and Barbuda alongside CHOGM. The forum is intended to provide young people with a platform to address issues affecting them and ensure that youth perspectives contribute to Commonwealth decision-making.

The 2026 Commonwealth Youth Forum is being held under the theme “Investing in Youth Agency – Co-Creating Pathways towards Shared Prosperity.” A 23-member international taskforce has been selected to help shape and deliver the forum.

Against this backdrop, One Country, One Project offers another avenue for youth-led action to be recognised within the wider Commonwealth youth agenda.

How the Selection Process Works

The process begins with project registration.

After registration, participating organisations are expected to implement their projects during August and September 2026. Projects will then be assessed based on the impact they have demonstrated.

For organisations hoping to stand out, it will therefore be important to document their work carefully. Evidence could include the number of people reached, activities completed, outcomes achieved, community feedback, photographs, testimonials, partnerships and other measurable results.

A strong project should be able to clearly answer three questions:

What problem did you address?

What did you do about it?

What changed as a result?

Application Deadline

The deadline to register for One Country, One Project 2026 is 22 August 2026.

Youth-led organisations across Commonwealth member countries are encouraged to review the requirements and register their projects before the deadline.

Conclusion

The Commonwealth Youth Council’s One Country, One Project 2026 is an opportunity for youth-led organisations to turn local action into wider recognition.

Rather than focusing only on ideas, the initiative places emphasis on projects that are implemented and can demonstrate meaningful community impact. For organisations already working on practical solutions to challenges affecting young people, this could be an opportunity to showcase their work on a Commonwealth-wide platform.

With projects scheduled for implementation between August and September 2026, interested organisations should begin preparing immediately and ensure that their proposed project has clear objectives, beneficiaries, activities and measurable outcomes.

The deadline for registration is 22 August 2026.
