The Delegation of the European Union to Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ), has officially opened applications for the 2026 EU-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship. This long-running initiative continues its mission of supporting emerging journalistic talent and deepening understanding of the European Union among young Canadians.

The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, 6 May 2026, and selected fellows will participate in a fully funded study tour to Brussels in fall 2026.

About EU-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship

Since its launch in 2001, the fellowship has recognized three exceptional young journalists every year. Winners embark on a week-long immersion in EU institutions, visiting the European Commission, the Canadian Mission to the EU, and several newsrooms across Brussels. They also attend the daily European Commission press briefing, offering a first-hand look at the core of EU communications.

All travel, accommodation, and program costs are fully covered by the Delegation of the European Union to Canada. In addition, winners receive a one-year CAJ membership or membership renewal, enhancing their professional network and access to resources.

The fellowship also includes an awards ceremony on Parliament Hill, co-hosted by the Office of the Speaker of the House of Commons and the CAJ—an added layer of recognition for outstanding young reporters.

Who Can Apply?

The program is designed for early-career journalists and students who demonstrate curiosity, strong research skills, and an interest in EU–Canada relations. Eligible applicants must:

  • Be 18 to 30 years old
  • Be actively enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary institution or working in journalism
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident

The fellowship looks for candidates who combine talent with a commitment to rigorous, factual, and insightful reporting.

What Applicants Must Submit

The application package consists of four key components:

1. A Sample of Work

Applicants must submit one recent journalistic piece—either unpublished or published within the previous six months. Accepted formats include:

  • Print or digital stories of up to 1,000 words
  • News reports of up to 90 seconds
  • Mini-documentaries of 4–5 minutes

The work must focus on the European Union or EU–Canada relations. The jury will evaluate clarity, research depth, relevance, and journalistic quality.

2. Letter of Motivation

The motivation letter should outline what the applicant intends to report on during or after the Brussels study tour, including target publication platforms such as student newspapers, blogs, or social media. It should also highlight how the experience will contribute to their professional development.

3. Curriculum Vitae

A brief CV summarizing education, experience, and relevant achievements.

4. Proof of Citizenship or Permanent Residency

Incomplete applications will not be considered, and all components must be submitted together.

Selection and Study Tour Timeline

A jury made up of EU Delegation representatives, journalists, and academics will meet in spring 2026 to review submissions. The three selected fellows will be notified directly.

The fully funded study tour will take place the week of 16 November 2026, offering participants a rare window into EU policymaking, diplomacy, and media ecosystems.

Strengthening Canada–EU Connections

The fellowship’s overarching goal is to encourage deeper engagement between Canadian journalists and European institutions. By providing access, mentorship, and an international perspective, the program helps nurture a generation of reporters who can thoughtfully cover global affairs.

As the Delegation of the European Union to Canada celebrates 50 years of diplomatic presence, the fellowship continues to serve as a bridge between Canadian media and European policy spaces.
