Are you passionate about inclusive education and ready to create lasting impact? The Peace Corps is calling on driven individuals to apply for the role of Deaf Education Teacher in Ghana. This rewarding two-year volunteer opportunity places you in the heart of rural communities, where you’ll support students with hearing impairments, help reduce educational disparities, and foster empowerment through education.

About the Role

As a Deaf Education Teacher, you’ll work in Ghanaian Schools for the Deaf, helping students at the primary and junior high levels develop their skills in math, science, and art. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Teaching 24 classroom periods per week (each 45 minutes)

  • Creating and delivering lessons that integrate literacy into STEAM subjects

  • Supporting students with tutoring, mentoring, and after-school activities

  • Collaborating with local teachers to improve teaching practices and promote gender empowerment

  • Introducing vocational skills such as sewing, art, and cooking

  • Encouraging a supportive learning environment rooted in inclusion and equity

You’ll also receive training on telling success stories, collecting data, and reporting your impact to Peace Corps Ghana.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • BA/BS in Special Education or Education with experience working with persons with disabilities

  • OR a degree in any discipline with state certification in Special Education or direct experience teaching students with disabilities

Preferred skills:

  • Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) is a plus, but not required

  • Experience in lesson planning and teaching trade/vocational skills

  • Understanding of Deaf culture and inclusive learning practices

No prior language requirement exists. You’ll learn Ghanaian Sign Language (GSL) during Pre-Service Training.

Living & Working in Ghana

Ghana is Peace Corps’ longest-standing post, offering a rich cultural tapestry and warm hospitality. Volunteers live in rural communities under similar conditions as host families—expect basic amenities like ventilated housing, borehole water, shared latrines, and cook stoves. Flexibility, cultural sensitivity, and a strong sense of community are essential to thrive.

During your 11-week Pre-Service Training (PST), you’ll receive hands-on education in:

  • Deaf education methods

  • Local culture and language

  • Health, safety, and personal well-being

  • Professional teaching practice with mentorship

Volunteers typically walk or bike around their sites and use public transportation when traveling longer distances.

Inclusive & Couple-Friendly

Peace Corps Ghana welcomes couples who apply under different roles. For Deaf Education Teachers, acceptable partner roles include:

  • Junior High School Math/Science Teacher

  • Sustainable Agriculture Agent

  • Community Health Extension Agent

Same-sex couples are considered for placements where legally permitted. Support and guidance are provided throughout the process.

Why Serve?

Joining the Peace Corps in Ghana offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to grow as a leader, educator, and global citizen. You’ll:

  • Be part of a vibrant, multicultural Peace Corps community

  • Gain international development experience

  • Build meaningful relationships with host communities

  • Help create a more inclusive future for students with disabilities
