About the GAIN Program

The GAIN program is a structured, multi-phase initiative that supports African students throughout their graduate application journey. It combines educational webinars, personalized mentorship, and financial support to reduce barriers to higher education.

The program is divided into three main components:

  1. Webinar Program
  2. Mentoring Program
  3. Alumni Support Network

Each component is designed to progressively equip participants with the knowledge, resources, and confidence needed to successfully apply to graduate schools worldwide.

The Role of a GAIN Mentor

GAIN mentors are at the heart of the program. They provide personalized guidance and support to mentees navigating the graduate application process.

Core Responsibilities

Mentors typically:

  • Guide one mentee through the entire application cycle
  • Conduct regular virtual meetings (usually bi-weekly)
  • Provide feedback on application materials such as CVs and statements of purpose
  • Offer advice on selecting universities and programs
  • Support preparation for standardized tests such as GRE and TOEFL
  • Share personal experiences and insights from their academic journeys

In addition to one-on-one mentoring, some mentors may choose to:

1. Webinar Program (January – June)

This foundational phase provides participants with essential knowledge about the graduate application process.

Topics covered include:

  • GRE, TOEFL, and standardized test strategies
  • Writing academic CVs and statements of purpose
  • Securing letters of recommendation
  • Choosing universities and career paths
  • Balancing academic pursuits with personal responsibilities

Webinars are held every two weeks and feature leading African scholars and experts.

2. Mentoring Program

This is the core phase where mentors actively engage with mentees.

  • One-on-one mentor-mentee matching based on:
    • Field of study

  • Bi-weekly meetings and continuous support

3. Financial Support for Mentees

High-performing mentees may qualify for Mentoring+, which offers:
