The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) offers fellowships aimed at enhancing social science research in Africa, specifically for PhD candidates focusing on peacebuilding, security, and development in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Overview of the Doctoral Dissertation Proposal Fellowships
These fellowships support PhD students developing their dissertation proposals and those who have recently completed a master’s degree. Recipients can receive up to US$3,000 for short-term research costs.
Program Components
Fellowship recipients can expect:
1.Thought Leadership
A six-month commitment to developing impactful research proposals that contribute to regional and global academic discussions.
2.Workshops
Participation in two mandatory workshops by the African Peacebuilding Network (APN) and Next Gen program to refine research questions and finalize dissertation proposals.
3.Networking
Access to a network of African scholars, mentorship opportunities, and peer-to-peer learning to enhance career prospects.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
•Be African citizens.
•Be enrolled in or intending to enroll in a PhD program at an accredited university in the specified countries.
•Hold a master’s degree at the time of application.
The SSRC encourages applications from diverse and historically marginalized communities, including women, Indigenous peoples, and LGBTQIA+ individuals.
