Young women aspiring to build careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education now have an outstanding opportunity to pursue university studies with full financial support. The Luigi Giussani Foundation (LGF), through the Leaders in Teaching Uganda (LIT-Uganda) Programme, has officially launched applications for the 2026/2027 Female STEM Student Teachers’ Scholarship.

The scholarship programme aims to support 1,000 young women in Uganda by removing financial barriers and increasing female participation in STEM teaching. Through this initiative, beneficiaries will receive comprehensive support to enable them to complete their Bachelor of Science with Education (BSc-Ed) studies and contribute to transforming education in Uganda.

About the Luigi Giussani Foundation

The Luigi Giussani Foundation (LGF) is an indigenous Ugandan organization that has spent more than two decades addressing educational challenges through research, innovation, and capacity building. The organization is committed to producing responsible, resilient, and self-aware individuals capable of contributing positively to society.

Through the Leaders in Teaching Uganda Programme, LGF seeks to strengthen the quality of education and improve access to opportunities for young women interested in STEM-related teaching careers.

Purpose of the Scholarship Programme

The Female STEM Student Teachers Scholarship is designed to:

  • Increase the number of female STEM teachers in Uganda.
  • Promote access to quality higher education for young women.
  • Empower women to pursue careers in science and mathematics education.
  • Address gender disparities in STEM fields.
  • Support vulnerable groups including refugees and women with disabilities.
  • Strengthen Uganda’s education sector through qualified female teachers.

Scholarship Benefits

Successful applicants will receive a comprehensive scholarship package that includes:

1. Full Tuition and Functional Fees

The scholarship covers tuition and university-related fees for the entire duration of the Bachelor of Science with Education programme.

2. Accommodation Support

Beneficiaries will receive accommodation support throughout their studies, reducing the burden associated with housing costs.

3. Personal Laptop

Each scholar will receive a laptop to support learning, research, assignments, and digital literacy.

4. Academic and Professional Support

Participants will benefit from mentorship and other academic support mechanisms aimed at ensuring success in their studies and future teaching careers.

Priority Groups

The programme emphasizes inclusion and equitable access. Priority consideration will be given to:

  • Young women aged between 18 and 35 years.
  • Refugees and internally displaced persons.
  • Women living with disabilities.
  • Female teachers already working in science, technology, and mathematics who wish to upgrade their qualifications.

In addition:

  • Seven percent of scholarships are reserved for refugees and internally displaced persons.
  • Five percent are reserved for persons with disabilities.
  • Twenty percent are allocated to in-service female science, technology, and mathematics teachers upgrading to a BSc-Ed degree.

Eligible Program

The scholarship supports students pursuing:

Bachelor of Science with Education (BSc-Ed)

The programme prepares future teachers specializing in STEM subjects and equips them with the knowledge and pedagogical skills needed to contribute to Uganda’s education system.

Why This Scholarship Matters

Women remain underrepresented in STEM careers across Africa. By investing in female teachers, the programme seeks to create a ripple effect that inspires more girls to pursue science and mathematics.

The scholarship not only supports individual students but also contributes to:

  • Improving educational outcomes.
  • Increasing female representation in STEM.
  • Enhancing digital literacy among future teachers.
  • Strengthening Uganda’s capacity in science education.
  • Building a more inclusive education system.
