About the Opportunity

Future Earth Coasts invites participants and expert contributors to join a new global online training series focused on just transitions in coastal regions. As the concept of just transitions expands beyond high-emission industries, this programme addresses the unique challenges faced by coastal communities—where livelihoods depend on natural resources and where climate solutions such as offshore renewables and coastal defences are increasingly located.

The series will explore how coastal societies worldwide are navigating climate action, sustainability, and social equity—ensuring that transitions do not deepen existing inequalities or create new ones.

Training Series Overview

The programme consists of six two-hour sessions, combining expert insights, guided discussions, and interactive group activities:

  1. Introduction to Just Transitions
  2. Coastal Protection
  3. Deltas
  4. Urban Coastal Environments
  5. Small Islands
  6. Synthesis and Application

By the end of the series, participants will:

  • Gain a global overview of just transition challenges and solutions in coastal zones
  • Learn from diverse case studies across regions and contexts
  • Develop practical insights applicable to their own professional and geographic settings

Assessment:
There is no formal assessment. Participants will be invited to deliver a short presentation in the final session, reflecting on the opportunities and challenges for a just transition in their own coastal locality.

Who Should Apply? (Participants)

The programme is designed for early- to mid-career professionals, including:

  • Coastal management practitioners
  • Researchers working with or alongside coastal communities
  • Policy, planning, and sustainability professionals

Places available: Approximately 15–20 participants

To register interest as a participant, sign up for updates and be prepared to reflect on:

  1. Why you are interested in learning about just transitions
  2. Your current research or work focus and the coastal community/geographic context you work in
  3. How this training series would support your role as a coastal practitioner

Call for Expert Contributors

Future Earth Coasts also welcomes expert contributors to deliver short 15-minute contributions as part of the training sessions, particularly in the areas of:

  • Coastal protection
  • Deltas
  • Urban coastal environments
  • Small islands

Contributions from all geographical regions are encouraged, provided there is a clear just transition focus.

When registering interest as a contributor, please consider how your case study addresses:

  1. How it contributes to a coastal just transition without reinforcing inequities
  2. Whether and how vulnerable stakeholders participate meaningfully in governance
  3. How national or local coastal development policies enable inclusive participation
  4. How conflicts related to coastal development and resource use are managed

Why Get Involved?

  • Engage with a global network of coastal practitioners and researchers
  • Share and learn from real-world case studies
  • Strengthen leadership capacity for equitable coastal sustainability
  • Contribute to shaping future approaches to just transitions in coastal zones
